About Summit Industries
Summit Industries, Inc., is one of Atlanta’s oldest privately held companies. Its origin goes back to the 1920s, when a pharmacist in Griffin, Georgia, developed a product he called Creomulsion. An investor from Atlanta believed in this product and, through contacts at Coca-Cola, arranged for a chemist to conduct stability testing on its formula. The tests proved Creomulsion to be a highly effective cough medicine. The investor then underwrote the promotion of Creomulsion throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
Creomulsion was advertised in more than 3,000 newspapers. Its sales grew consistently for more than 30 years. Creomulsion for Children was introduced in 1954, and sales soon doubled.
In 1963, Summit purchased the Corona Manufacturing Company of Kenton, Ohio. Its principal product, Corona Antiseptic Ointment had been introduced in 1906. This lanolin-based ointment was originally sold both for human and animal use, but by the time of the sale, it was labeled only for animal use. Sales continued to increase through the 1960s, primarily in the equestrian market.
In 1977, Summit Industries purchased The Lexol Company of West Caldwell, New Jersey. Lexol Leather Conditioner had a reputation as a superior product for preserving and maintaining leather. Because it was also lanolin-based Lexol complemented Corona, especially in the equestrian market. Lexol soon expanded into other markets, such as shoe repair, antique car restoration and luggage. Today, Lexol is the leader in the leather care category.
During the 1980s, Summit focused on line extensions for the Corona and Lexol brands, including Corona Hoof Dressing, Corona Shampoo Concentrate, Corona Udder Butter, Lexol-pH Leather Cleaner and Lexol-nf Non-Greasy Neatsfoot Formula. The company also introduced Vinylex Protectant for vinyl, rubber and plastic under the Lexol brand.
Later in the decade, Summit introduced Lantiseptic Skin Protectant, a human-use version of Corona Ointment for the nursing home market. Two line extensions for Lantiseptic were added in 1993: Lantiseptic Therapeutic Cream and Lantiseptic All Body Wash.
Summit currently manufactures and distributes 13 top quality product lines, including 54 different SKUs, for the OTC drug, long-term health care, automotive aftermarket, equestrian, handbag and luggage and furniture markets. Summit Industries is committed to produce the best quality products for these markets and to the complete satisfaction of all its customers.
